This would be great to just get on the open road and drive and not even know where you were going to  end up at the end of the day!

Well I would like to do it for like a month or so but it would take a lot of cash!

You could always try the "budget" version of this.  I have been known to do day trips where I leave in the morning and just start driving.  I might drive on highway and I might drive on dirt.  If a road interests me I take it.  If something looks cool I stop and check it out.  Sometimes I just make turns at random.  All I do is keep track of the time so I have an idea of how long it will take me to get home.  Usually this isn't nearly as long as it took to get where I'm at because I won't necessarily be retracing my steps.  The cost is just gas and whatever you decide to spend along the way.

I haven't tried this in a while but you can also extend the day trip into as many days as you have time for.  You can save on lodging by taking a tent/sleeping bag.  You can save on food costs by taking a cooler and shopping at grocery stores.

Stay safe and let us know about your adventures!

Not too long ago I drove to the Grand Canyon from my second home in Chino Valley, AZ.  At the time i could spend only one day.  While driving up Highway 64 I saw a few dirt roads but i had to pass them up.  They were forest service roads.  In mid-September i will be in Chino again for 3 weeks - the first 10 days alone until my wife arives on day 11.  I intend to take advantage of the first 10 and turn onto one of those dirt roads.  I think i need pack some camping equipment but that's about it.  I will keep you posted.
